WHO WE ARE

An Díaz and Yokatta Brothers is a blues, gospel and roots quartet founded in 2017

An Díaz (Argentina) met Yokatta Brothers in the North or France, Their repertoire mixes the versatile voice of this young singer with Yokatta Brothers’ roots rythms made of Blues, Boogie, Jazz and the thrill of Gospel. After a first album of covers, Spiral Blues, Arras’s Blues Skies (EP), they give birth to their own sound in this first studio album of original songs.

With this original repertoire they won the first prize at the Blues Challenge at the Rendez vous de L'Erdre festival, as well as 4 special jury prizes, including the Collectif des Radios Blues prize, the Blues sur Suresnes prize, the Bain de Blues Festival prize, and the Rives de Blues & CO prize.

They also won the Heroes Challenge at the Retro C'est Trop festival in June 2023.

They won the Polish prize at the Mississippi Blues Trail Challenge at the Cahors Blues Festival 2023.

An Díaz says...

An Díaz & Yokatta Brothers thank you for taking the time to listen to our stories of joy, uncertainty, loss... our life stories. Our festive spirit, our sense of humor and a touch of existentialism will hopefully reach your ears and your heart. That's the cathartic power of the Blues.

The objective of the album is to pay tribute to each decade of Blues history, starting with the crazy 1920s. I’ve explained each song briefly below:

On Spiral Up we express our love for Tommy Johnson and the languid phrasings of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. We remember Tampa Red and Sonny Boy Williamson I with Laugh it Off, a song about laughing at tragedy. Dinah Washington’s flare inspired me to revisit the 40s and write Fall in Lust. On Can’t stop now, we convey our admiration for the 50s, Bo Diddley and New Orleans’ diversity. Gone Away flirts with 60s folk while Make ‘em Count,Trop Forte and No risk electrify our sound. Y.O.K.A.T.T.A. is filled with (not so) private jokes, memories and our philosophy. In Japanese, we use this word to celebrate a good meal, the achievement of a goal or to express relief from an anxiety that now belongs to the past.

This album is by definition a tragedy and a success.

I conceived these songs to express everything I would have liked to teach my sister, but in 2018 she committed suicide and I was never able to share these songs with her. Alana was her name as a painter. I celebrate her life and our relationship in every note I sing on this album.

If this album gives you a little of what music has given us, our work is done.
