A love note to New Orleans
An Díaz & Yokatta Brothers release “Komorebi in New Orleans”.
The release party took place at the New Orleans Jazz Museum on Oct 23, 2024.
The album’s title, Komorebi—a Japanese word for “light shining through trees’ leaves.”
An Díaz explains that for her this word represents the uplifting essence of Black American
Music. And, on a more personal level, this album embodies resilience. Following the loss of
her sister, An’s journey through grief inspired the creation of Alana (released in 2023) and this new work.
Songs like “Must Be Doin' Fine” celebrate swamp blues, while “Alone Around You” is inspired by
The Meters and Andy Bey and explores loneliness among friends. “Sandwich Bored Man”,
inspired by John Lee Hooker, critiques modern influencers, while Child Free Blues brings a
touch of old-time sound like Snooks Eaglin’s to modern taboos.

A rendition of Marion Black’s
“Who Knows” pays homage to African musical roots, while “Hidin’ in Plain Sight” is a ballad
about fake smiles and mental health. “Killjoy” closes the album with a gospel-inspired reflection on life’s impermanence.
This second album of original songs, recorded in New Orleans at Blue Velvet Studio,
captures the soul of Black American Music and explores universal themes with authenticity and
depth. The album tackles themes like a child-free life, friendship endings, the circus of
influencers and men’s mental health. An Díaz reflects, “Life is fragile, but sunlight finds its way
through. Art, and the family we choose, can save us from ourselves.”
"My brothers and I thank you for listening to our stories of joy, uncertainty, and loss—our life
stories," she shares. "Through blues, humor, and a hint of existentialism, we hope to
reach your ears and heart. That’s the cathartic power of the Blues."
